Bomb Blasts on the city’s suburban train On July 11th, 2006, the busy metropolis of Mumbai experienced serial Bomb Blasts targeting the city’s suburban train system. The bombs exploded during the peak hours of 6.00 to 6.30 p.m. A few minutes after the bomb blasts Mrs. Homai N. Modi received a call from Mantralaya for help. With some of our volunteers she immediately visited Sion Hospital, saw victims being treated and delivered bed sheets, clothes, detol, medicines etc. required at that point of time by Sion Hospital. Biscuits were also delivered to KEM Hospital Blood Bank for distribution to the blood donors. Bhabha Hospital required 37 blood units and the same were immediately delivered. Help Desks of Red Cross, the State Government, L I C India and Western Railwaywere set up at the Red Cross Office, Mumbai, on 22nd July 2006 for providing a platform to the families and victims of the bomb blasts requiring medical assistance, help and advice for follow-up on relief package announced by the Government and the Railways. Mr. MurliDeora at whose initiative the Help Desks were organized was present.

Mr. Krishna Vasta, Secretary, Relief and Rehabilitation, Government of Maharashtra, Mr. Rao, Representative of the Western Railway, Mr. Prakash Solanki, Development Of?cer, LIC of lndia, in addition to the Red Cross Officials were present. Several victims and their relatives contacted the Help Desks. Red Cross promised to help those who did not get help from the State Government or Railways. Refreshments were served by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. The Help Desks remained open upto 26th July 2006. Red Cross provided financial assistance to Mr. ArifRehan and Mr. Girish Gandhi. Till 31st March 2007, a sum of Rs. 45,740/- was spent on Mr. Rehan’s medical expenses.
